Do not Get Fooled by Odometer Rolled Over

One of the major scams used in used car selling is odometer tampering. This is when dealers fool the consumers because the customer could not figure out the odometer rolled over.

Rolling back the odometer is not an easy task; only skilled personnel can perform it. If the consumer is very keen on observing, they can spot a few signs of an odometer rolled over.

Many used car buyers ask this question "What is an odometer in a car?" An odometer is an instrument that reads the distance covered by the vehicle. The majority of the odometers in used cars have been tampered with. It is easy to tamper with mechanical odometers, and contrary to popular belief, digital odometers can also be easily tampered with.

The customer need not be an expert mechanic to determine whether the odometer has been tampered with. The easiest way to know whether the odometer has been tampered with is to compare the reading from the vehicle's maintenance and inspection records.

If the customer has a mechanical odometer instead of a digital odometer, one crucial factor is whether the numbers on the gauge are aligned correctly. If the numbers have gaps between them or are crooked, chances are the odometer has been tampered with.

Another major sign is to read the mileage. If the vehicle gives lesser mileage and is new, the customer should be suspicious. Either the readings are wrong, or something is seriously wrong with the vehicle.

The tires are also a great indicator of the condition of the car. Since the tires are changed after every 20,000 miles, it should have the original tires if the readings show below 20,000. If the vehicle does not have the original tires, ask the dealer about the tires.
