When you buy a used car, have your odometer reading example inspected. If your odometer is manipulated, the miles are reset by nearly 40,000 miles. If your odometer shows fewer miles, it could be a tampering problem.

Check for physical signs of odometer tampering. Inspect the odometer to see that there are no gaps between readable numbers, and the numbers don't look crooked. Any of those signs point to a probability that the odometer was rolled back.
