What is an Odometer in a Car?

Posted December 24, 2021 by allenstewartpc

Odometer records the distance covered by the vehicle in total. It is combined with the speedometer, and it shows the vehicle's speed. When vehicles were first introduced, they all had mechanical odometers.

With the recent changes, these odometers are no longer mechanical. They are either digital or a combination of mechanical and digital.

The odometers were first discovered in the works of Roman and Greek. There are multiple cogs in a mechanical odometer. Each cog has a numerical digit. The cog turns as per the wheel's rotations, with the help of a drive mechanism and a cable.

Odometer readings are very crucial in determining the price of a used car. Hence crooks started rolling over the odometer. This reduced the number of miles driven by the vehicle, causing the seller to sell the vehicle at a higher price than the worth.

If the vehicle has lower odometer reading, it means the car has driven for a lesser number of miles, indicating the car is in good condition. This odometer rolled over is responsible for automobile buyers to lose over $1 billion annually.

Tampering the reading in a mechanical odometer is very easy. This doesn't mean tampering with a digital odometer is difficult. Crooks have found ways to tamper with the readings of digital odometers. Fraudsters do this by changing the odometer readings in a mechanical and digital odometer.

The best part about having a digital odometer is adding multiple trips to the odometer. This means the odometer will record particular trips made by the owner while covering some distance. Once the trip has been completed, the owner will reset the trip to zero. The crucial point is that the trip is reset to zero and not the odometer readings.
