(August 03, 2020): Kadashan, through his book “Yaakwdaat Aya: This is Yakutat,” offers one of the very first and few glimpses of the daily lives of Tlingit Indians. He weaves his book around a number of short stories offering glimpses to the lifestyle and events of the Tlingit Indians, living in South-eastern Alaska. Through the story, he beautifully depicts the ways in which the Tlingit have incorporated their traditional values and beliefs in their day to day lives. Offering a vivid clarity to the intimate fondness and love he shares for village life, Kadashan writes a book that offers readers a new world of the unknown.
The book revolves around not only their daily lifestyle but also the ordinary events in village life that is extremely exclusive to their own. Drawing a major emphasis on the tiff faced between the Tlingit youth of today and the Western society impacting the traditional culture, he has illustrated his words and thoughts in an intriguing manner. ‘I have always been fascinated by the village lifestyle, and this book is certainly a testimony to that. Through my book, I seek to reflect upon the lifestyle and the intimate details that a village life encounters’, as said by Kadashan, the author.
