From the Darkness into the Light: Joseph Smith’s Journey to Uganda to Serve Refugees in Need

Posted July 13, 2025 by brav7979

Uganda hosts over 1.6 million refugees, many of them women and children fleeing conflict in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other nearby regions. These families often arrive with nothing—no shelter, no security, and little hope.

Canton, Pennsylvania-Joseph Smith knows what it means to be redeemed. For ten years, he was deeply involved in satanic practices—until a divine encounter 29 years ago changed the course of his life. Now, as a passionate follower of Christ and servant of the gospel, Joseph is stepping into a new chapter: bringing the hope and healing of Jesus to Uganda’s refugee camps.

"For the past six years, I’ve been serving God full-time. I’ve come to realize that even my darkest past has a place in His redemptive plan,” says Joseph.

In October 2025, Joseph will travel to Uganda to serve alongside Scott Steinloski, founder of RefugeeRelief.care, a ministry that has been reaching displaced families for years. This invitation comes after years of prayer and prophetic confirmation. Five years ago, Joseph and his wife, Sue Ann Smith, received prophetic words about a joint ministry. One year ago, Joseph was given a vision to serve refugees in Uganda. This trip is the next faithful step in that calling.

“We don’t always understand God’s timing, but we walk by faith,” Joseph says. “This is not just a trip—it’s a divine mission to serve those suffering from war, displacement, and trauma.”
Why Uganda? Why Now?

Uganda hosts over 1.6 million refugees, many of them women and children fleeing conflict in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other nearby regions. These families often arrive with nothing—no shelter, no security, and little hope.

“Having experienced true spiritual rescue myself, I want to bring that same message of redemption to others—through the love of Christ, compassionate care, and practical support,” Joseph explains.
A Call for Support

To make this mission possible, Joseph is raising $4,000 to cover all necessary travel, living, and health-related expenses for the trip. The breakdown includes:

Airfare: $800–$1,500
In-country expenses (lodging, meals, transport): $1,200–$2,000
Visa: $50
Vaccinations (required, incl. Yellow Fever): $100–$400
Other expenses: Passport ($100), personal supplies ($100–$150)

“I don’t want to let financial obstacles hinder this God-given opportunity. With your help—through donations and prayer—I can focus fully on serving,” says Joseph.
How to Get Involved

Donate through Joseph’s official GoFundMe Campaign. Every dollar counts.
Share the campaign with your community, church, or social media.
Pray for protection, provision, and purpose as Joseph prepares to go—and for Sue Ann, who will remain stateside during this mission.

Joseph promises to share updates, testimonies, and photos throughout the journey. “This is our mission,” he says. “Let’s go together to bring light to the forgotten and hurting.”
Thank You

“Thank you for reading, for praying, and for giving. I believe this is the beginning of something bigger than me—something God is orchestrating to show the world the power of His love.”
