PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), first released in early 1996, now has 11 languages. Furthermore, It has been circulating for over 25 years. However, in 2021, the publisher, PMI (Project Management Institute), runs the most significant framework-change revision, 7th edition, in history this July. Moreover, the well-recognized Traditional Chinese revision will be launched in November.

Well-known project management professionals, unanimously recommended

Joe Chang, Darencademy podcast host, also known as CEO of Fast Track Project Management Service (識博管理顧問) and co-founder of ProjectUp Knowledge platform, and the review committee member of traditional Chinese translation, mentioned that this revision is enormous. The content and ideas of change are essential, especially as it brings many new project management concepts. Therefore, this revision is a milestone.

Galen Gao, CIO of Core Pacific Group HQ (威京總部集團), PMO of China Petrochemical Development Corp. (中石化), and the review committee member of traditional Chinese translation, said "What attracts me in the big revision on PMBOK 7th ed., is the format transformation from reference book-like (lots of ITTO). Which makes it more interesting in reading and more fun in translation."

Self-disruption innovation, recreating the classics
We interviewed William Chen, the chairman of Project Management Institute Taiwan Chapter (PMI-TW). He mentioned that "PMBOK 7th edition broke down its old framework and recreated a brand new one. Take martial arts as a metaphor, the 7th edition is like mental expertise, and the 6th edition is like fundamental techniques; they complement each other. The 7th edition is suitable for qualified project managers or someone who passed PMP. Furthermore, the 6th edition (or an older edition) is practical to newcomers, emphasizing the process and ITTO framework. New project managers can easily follow the techniques from the book step-by-step. The 7th edition (new edition) enlarges the weight of the business environment in practical project status, making the professionals have more flexibility and direction when managing projects.

Taiwan PMBOK translation product owner Dr. Roger Chou (周龍鴻), who obtained a doctorate degree from the Department of Business Management of Sun Yat-sen University in September this year, and he achieved this goal within a minimum limit in PhD program 3 years through project management methodology. He said a new revision of PMBOK is self-disruption of PMI. From the analysis of the new 12 principles, conventional water-fall style and Agile style is half and half allocation. Therefore, it can be considered that PMBOK accepts Agile but embraces it fully. Furthermore, the 7th edition considerably changed the narrative structure and content to meet the needs of contemporary professionals. Therefore, it can be considered a rare "disruptive innovation" from the Body of Knowledge perspective.

PMI is advancing its PMBOK content with time and managing the digital transformation for the knowledge spread. PMI members can learn through PMBOK and retrieve the documents required for project work from projectmanagement.com. The new PMIstandard+ digital platform solution released with the 7th edition allows readers to use and exchange knowledge in a more convenient and diversified way. From then on, PMBOK is no longer a reference textbook that is being stored in the warehouse after passing the certificate, but a project management hall for interaction among theory and practice, offline and online, with flexibility and continuous improvement.
