When it comes to the success of pharmaceutical companies in bringing new products and procedures into the market, drug discovery infrastructures are critical to the overall success. Pharmaceutical companies spend millions of dollars each year on the R&D. In recent years, the industry has been growing at an accelerated rate, fueled primarily by the introduction of innovative and cost-effective products and procedures. Currently, top pharmaceutical companies are investing billions of dollars in research and development, but they also need a reliable way to manage and disseminate that research and development information.
Drug discovery informatics covers a wide range of technology areas, including biotechnology, bioinformatics, clinical trials, nutraceuticals, bioeconomics, information systems, pharmacology, and others. The field is further divided into three core areas: clinical, regulatory, and informatics. Each encompasses a different subset of the disease or condition the product is meant to treat, as well as different types of information management systems.
Because drug discovery informatics is a rapidly evolving discipline, there is a constant need for qualified professionals with both basic and advanced knowledge in this specialized area. Many pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies hire experienced consultants and full-time researchers who are involved in the design and implementation of clinical trials, blood tests, and large-scale studies. Other companies rely on contract research organizations to help provide the expertise and drive needed in the development of new technologies. There are two types of technologies in this field, those that can be used on their own and those that require a host of supporting software and hardware. The latter is known as System-On Chip (SOC) technologies, as opposed to Software-On Chip (SOC) technologies, which are built using an entire computer system.
