The floating equipment such as float shoe and float collar is considered as a wellbore barrier preventing backflow during the cementing operations. This floating equipment needs to be designed, manufactured and tested as critical components during cementing operations. Float shoe comes with a backpressure valve that prevents fluids like cement or water from entering the casing, while the pipe is lowered into the hole after placement which helps in preventing cement from flowing back into the casing, by greatly enabling circulation down through the casing. Whereas the float collars are placed one to three joints above the float shoe which provide a seat for the cementing plugs. In float collars, the top plug is pumped behind the full volume of slurry and the bottom plug is pumped ahead of the cement.

Once everything is seated, the top cementing plug shut down the fluid flow which will greatly prevent over-displacement of the cement. The gap or space present in between the float collar and float shoe provides a contaminated area to entrap the fluids that are likely-contaminated from the wiping action of the top cementing plug. It is important to make sure that you secure the contaminated fluid away from the float shoe where forming a strong cement bond is of primary importance. The basic floating equipment such as float collar and float shoe is generally used in the lower section of the well to help:

• Reduces the strain fallen on the derrick while guiding casing slough zones and past ledges in the hole,
• To help provide a landing point for top cementing plugs and bottom cementing plugs,
• Floating equipment is used to provide a back pressure valve to prevent cement from flowing back into the inner diameter of the casing. The top cementing plug has been bumped after the cement has turned the corner into the annulus.
