Here are some facts about the arrival and popularity of the Bowl Game in North America.
The Emergence of Bowl Game
The first-ever bowl game was played in 1902 between Michigan and Stanford. Michigan won the game with a whopping score of 49-0. The game was named “Bowl Game” by synchronizing it with the Rose Bowl Stadium, a bowl-shaped stadium. From 1923 onwards, the bowl games were only played in Rose Bowl Stadium.
Interestingly, this game is played in the season of the new year. However, it has two factors that resulted in this. The first one is the warm climate. In North America, the countries experience a warmer climate during January. The second cause is the ease of travel. A bowl game is preferably played around the new year to promote tourism and business. The warmer season helps the fans to travel far and enjoy the game.
Youth Bowl Games
The youth football games are ideally played from mid-December to January. The number of teams is increasing, so the number of games to qualify has been decreased. If a team wins 5 out of 12 games, they are invited to a bowl game.
Until 1930 the Rose Bowl was the only major college bowl game. And till 1940, five prime college bowl games had emerged, including the Rose Bowl. They are the Sugar Bowl, the Cotton Bowl Classic, the Orange Bowl, and the Sun Bowl.
The Subdivision Games
Various teams fight for the playoff tournaments at junior levels, with a national championship game played at a neutral site. The Football Bowl Subdivision is further divided into three divisions.
The first one is Division I Football Championship Subdivision. It hosts only one bowl game at the Celebration Bowl. Top colleges and university teams are invited to this tournament.
The second one is the Division II Football Championship Subdivision. The teams who fail to qualify for the Division II compete in this tournament. There are four post-season bowls that are played on the same day. The games are played on the first Saturday of December. The four post-season bowls are Mineral water Bowl, Live United Texarkana Bowl, Corsicana Bowl, and C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl.
Division III plays ten bowl games. The teams that could not qualify for D III participate in this tournament.
