Driver Defense Team, an Illinois traffic-law office, is providing free representation to commercial drivers facing traffic tickets during the current health crisis. The firm operates out of Chicago and Stone Park, mainly in Cook, DuPage and Lake Counties.

This pro-bono offer is an effort to support CDL freight operators. These largely overlooked essential service workers are currently showing an outstanding commitment to their professions and their communities.

The situation on the roads is unprecedented. The entire supply line is strained due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Increased spread of the virus has increased demand at hospitals and clinics. Additionally, recent buying behavior in retail establishments has drained local inventory. Public stockpiling of household products, cleaning goods and medical supplies has emptied regional warehouses of finished goods. This has placed pressure on manufacturers to resupply, increasing demand for raw material supply.

Keeping truckers on the road is an essential requirement of maintaining supply and controlling this epidemic. Accordingly, both Illinois Governor Jay Pritzker and the Department of Homeland Security have named truck drivers as essential workers during this crisis.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has also taken measures to deal with the increased strain on workers and infrastructure caused by COVID-19-related demand. Most notably, the administration lifted several hours-of-service rules for truckers providing direct aid.

Many states have relaxed limitations or provided other support. Illinois raised weight limits to 88,000 pounds until April 12. Michigan and Missouri have also provided some weight exemptions. Indiana has opened many weigh stations to provide additional rest areas.

As a result of critical-worker status and reduced regulations, many drivers are now working longer hours than before, in more dangerous conditions. The presence of the epidemic also represents a significant health risk to truckers and their families. In addition to all of this, a single ticket could still threaten a commercial operator's entire career.

Driver Defense Team defends roughly 300 commercial drivers each year — protecting licenses, jobs and American infrastructure in general. The attorneys are not only willing to continue this work during the crisis, but they are also in an excellent professional position to do so.

In addition to free defense against Illinois petty moving violations received in Cook, DuPage and Lake county during the Illinois stay-at-home order (COVID-19 Executive Order No. 8), the law office is expressing its gratitude by offering 50-percent discounts on defense against ordinance violations and criminal traffic charges. The same terms for timing and location apply to the offer of discounted services.

The firm is operating remotely for the duration of the Illinois stay-at-home order. Truckers can inquire about representation by calling the office number, using online contact methods or sending an email.
