Who Are the Highwaymen?

Emerging during the Jim Crow era, the Highwaymen were a group of 26 African American artists from Fort Pierce and Vero Beach who defied societal barriers to create and sell over 200,000 paintings. These self-taught artists, including Harold Newton and Alfred Hair, transformed Florida's lush landscapes into vibrant masterpieces, often sold directly to customers along roadsides and door-to-door.

Today, their work is celebrated in galleries, museums, and private collections across the country, including the White House and Florida’s Capitol. Their legacy, rooted in determination and artistry, continues to captivate collectors and art lovers alike.

Join Us for an Artist Meet & Greet
At the Wellington event, attendees will have a special chance to meet Al Black, one of the original Highwaymen artists. Al will be sharing his experiences and showcasing his artwork, offering a rare glimpse into the journey and creative process of this legendary group.
