Hybrid Integrated Circuit or Hybrid Microcircuit or in the simplest terms hybrid is a mini-electronic circuit which is constructed of the different types of devices like semiconductor devices monolithic ICs or diodes and the passive components like the inductors, transformers, resistors and the capacitors that are bonded to PCB (Printed Circuit Board) or to a substrate.
Integrated Circuit is the term that is used currently for referring to Monolithic IC that differs notably from HIC which is fabricated with the help of inter-connecting components that are well fabricated in different series of steps on a single wafer that is then diced into the chips. There are some hybrid circuits which contain Monolithic ICs and MCM hybrid circuits in particular.
When purchased from a good hybrid circuit manufacturer, they are encapsulated in Epoxy. A hybrid circuit serves as a component on a PCB in the same way as MIC or Monolithic Integrated Circuits. The basic different is these two devices are how they are manufactured and constructed. Benefit of the hybrid circuits is that component which is not included in monolithic ICs like crystals, inductors, wound components etc.
Thick film technology is widely used as an interconnecting medium for HIC or Hybrid Integrated Circuits. Use of the screen printed thick film can interconnect and provide benefits of versatility over thin films. Although feature sizes can be much larger and deposited resistors have wide tolerance level. Multi-layer thick film is used for further improving integration using a screen-printed insulating dielectric that can ensure connections. One of the key benefits for the circuit designers is liberty of choosing the resistor value in the advanced thick film technology.
There are planar resistors as well that are screen printed and included in the thick film interconnecting design. Dimensions and compositions of the resistors can be chosen for the purpose of providing desired values. Final resistor value is always determined by the design and can be adjusted as Laser trimming. Once these hybrid circuits are populated with the component, it is easier to achieve the fine tuning before the final test.
In short, hybrid circuits are well-fabricated circuits.
