An incremental sensor, for example, facilitates“position change information” so that the actual position is unknown at the beginning. It is detected at the time of the homing routine.
The brushless motorhas three magnetic hall sensors to render “coarse absolute position detail” for the preliminary alignment of the magnetic fields. These types of sensors are generally small, accurate and cost-effective.
The absolute sensor provides the actual physical position within one revolution (or within the range of linear travel). The motor does not need Halls, and homing is necessary for rotary applications (when the range of movement is more than one revolution). Such sensors are usually bigger and more expensive than incremental devices.
If you need position sensors for rotary devices, go with the multi-turn ones. It provides an actual position (over multiple revolutions). With this, homing can be fully eradicated. Multi-turn devices include internal gearing. They are the bulkiest and most expensive solution.
How do position sensors measure accuracy level?Sensors let you know how close each measured position is to the actual physical position. In fact, accuracy is a system issue that can be dominated by mechanical errors (like eccentricity, flatness and straightness).
You can count the “repeatability of the machine” with sensors (defines the range of measured positions when the system is returned to the same physical position multiple times). Sensor hysteresis is an integral factor in repeatability.
