Student housing means a structure specifically designed for long-term stay by students of an educational facility for sleeping accommodations.
UOFT Student housing includes the following types: dormitory, fraternity/sorority house or apartment.
The dormitory is meant for students and its most important function is to provide a substitute home during studies and good possibilities to study. The purpose of these rules is to create an open, pleasant and secure atmosphere and a peaceful living environment in the dormitory.
Fraternity and sorority houses range in size from three to twenty bedrooms or more. The larger houses generally have a large meeting room and/or dining room, commercial kitchen and study room.
A student apartment is a form of off-campus housing for college students. Student apartments typically are not owned by the college or university but are available to those who are enrolled in college classes and are generally priced for a per bed lease.
The 5 most common types of NYU student accommodation are:
Halls of residence - Generally owned by the University and tend to be for first years only. They are a great way to adjust to living away from home, and making new friends. There are a variety of options including catered/self-catered and ensuite/shared bathrooms.
House/flat share - This is the most common type of private accommodation for students, where we can rent a property with friends.
Room in a private house - This is where we rent a room out in a house where the landlord currently lives. It's probably preferable to the more dingy student houses.
Private flat - The two things to consider are firstly, whether we enjoy our own company, understand that whilst we will probably be out socializing in the day; we will most likely be by ourself most nights. The other thing to consider with private flats is the price as they are the most expensive accommodation on this list.
Private sector halls of residence - These properties tend to be similar to University owned halls of residence, except they're open to everyone, and are generally more expensive as they're privately owned. The contracts are normally 52 weeks and as they're independent.
Ryerson Off-Campus Housing is more familiar with the area surrounding campus, they may consider moving into a house or apartment close to the college grounds instead of on them. Typically, this happens junior or senior year but some students elect to forego university housing from the beginning. These are commonly offered by Harrington Housing.
