Is my child ready for kindergarten?

Every parent always wants their child to have the best life possible, and families also realize that a lot of this comes from education.

Not only are they milestones in their own right, but preschool and kindergarten are the most important years. If a child falls behind in their earliest years, it has been shown to be a hindrance in many other aspects of life – and not just academics. There are a number of milestones that children should reach before entering kindergarten. Check out some pre-kindergarten milestones your child should be striving for (with your help and encouragement, of course!), and sign up for preschool at one of our many locations! The Avenues, The Second Avenues, The Eastside, and The Cottonwood Kindergartens are exceptional Reggio Emilia schools that would be a great fit for your child.

Speech development

By the time your preschooler becomes kindergartner, he should be able to hold a conversation. Asking questions is an integral part of speech, not only because it's how people converse and interact as a whole, but it also shows understanding. If a child doesn't have the language to ask about something they don't know, they can miss out on information and knowledge – this is especially important when children enter school where concepts won't be immediately understood.

Reading concepts

It doesn't matter if your child doesn't read yet - our preschool will go through lots of printed concepts with your little one and they will learn and develop these concepts in kindergarten. By the time your child reaches kindergarten, however, he should be able to recognize some sight words (like "ta" and "mommy" and words from his environment like "stop"). They should also be able to understand that we read from left to right and also hold the book correctly. Even showing and pretending to read is an excellent form of exercise.

Counting and numbers

Your child should enter kindergarten understanding how counting works and should be able to count to at least ten. Not only should they be able to count to ten, but they should also be able to identify which number is next in order, such as answering questions like "what comes after eight?" and also being able to count a number of objects. Practice with your child by asking them “how many?” and watching them count the objects in front of them.

Social and developmental milestones

Gross motor skills and fine motor skills are very important for a child's development. By nursery and preschool, your child should be able to hold a writing utensil like a pencil or crayon – although some children have a little trouble developing these fine motor skills, and that's usually okay. Using scissors is also something that should be worked on before starting kindergarten.

Having a positive and successful academic experience is one of the key and fundamental aspects of life. Academic experiences and achievements open so many doors and offer so many opportunities, it makes sense why kindergarten and preschool—the first classes a child ever attends—are so important. In terms of social and other developmental milestones, preschoolers should be able to use the bathroom by the time they enter kindergarten. Of course, accidents happen now and then, but overall, your child should be pretty independent in their bathroom skills. They should also be able to play with other children their age, know the concepts of sharing and apologizing, and begin to understand another child's emotions.

Prepare your child for kindergarten by enrolling in kindergarten

Preschool is such an important year for many reasons, but one of the main ones is that it continues to help children develop these very important milestones. Our preschools in Salt Lake City can help you ensure your child is on the developmental path they should be, but we also like to remind families that preschool milestones are guidelines rather than rules.

Everyone grows at their own pace, and not reaching a milestone right away when they "should" be no immediate cause for alarm. However, there are resources available that can help your child grow, and our preschools are one such example.
