Bharat Book Bureau Provides the Trending Market Research Report on "Impact of COVID-19 on the Global Airline Industry: Hot Topic Brief - Issue 6" under Leisure category. The report offers a collection of superior market research, market analysis, competitive intelligence and industry reports.
Summary
COVID-19, commonly referred to as the Coronavirus, is dominating headlines the world over. No industry has seen a greater impact than airlines.
Key Highlights
- Delta, Lufthansa, Ryanair, and easyJet are just some of the high-profile airlines that have either started to operate or have announced an increased number of flights. While they have been clear to state that this depends on government action and changes to travel restrictions, it very much represents a positive step for the industry. Airlines need to start generating revenue again as they wrestle with rapid cash burn so operating at least a partial flight schedule for the busy summer months will be highly beneficial. US airlines added to the optimism this week as American and United both announced plans to operate increased domestic schedules in July.
- New guidelines issued by specialized UN agency the International Civil Aviation Organization may have provided us with a glimpse of what travel may look like in future. Many of the recommendations centre on reduced human contact via the use of technology, as well as mask wearing, temperature controls and disinfection of aircraft. In a boost for airlines, the guideline do not advocate leaving the middle seat empty. This will be particularly well-received by low cost carriers that rely on high load factors for their business model to work. Recession-hit consumers that are reluctant to fly on health grounds would not be receptive to the kind of price hikes that a reduction in capacity would almost certainly bring about.
- In the UK, the imminent introduction of a 14-day mandatory quarantine period continues to create tension between the government and a number of industry stakeholders who feel that the measure will cause unnecessary hardship for industry players. The US has announced it will ban mainland Chinese airlines from serving the US, from 16 June. The move comes as Beijing continues to block US carriers from resuming China service under a 26 March decision by the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) that was designed to protect the country from the Covid-19 pandemic. If the political point scoring does not draw to a close, there will be serious consequences for the tourism industry in both countries.
