Golf stroke mechanics refers to the processes through which a golfer makes judgments on how to make a play (swing). It is composed of two parts, the pre-stroke and the stroke itself. The golfer decides on the stance to take during the pre-stroke, and which club to use.

Judgements Pre-Stroke

Which way to face The golfer stands facing the hole with their non-dominant side. And if they're right handed, they 'd face the target (where they want to strike the ball) with their left side, or if left handed, they 'd face the target with their right side.

The golfer's feet How the golfer stands depends on the type of club chosen. When they use a short iron, they divide their feet slightly less than the width of their neck, if a medium iron is used then the feet are separated from the width of their neck, and if a long iron is used the feet are separated slightly wider than the width of their shoulder.

Ball positioningThe ball is positioned in the middle of the player 's stance while using short iron. The ball is positioned in front of the center of the player 's location when using middle and long irons, and when using woods the ball is positioned opposite the front foot heel of the golfer.

Positioning of the golfer's weightThe golfer 's weight is put on the front foot when using short iron. When using middle iron, during the swing, the weight of the golfer is moved between both feet, and when using long iron and wood, the weight of the golfer is equally distributed between the two feet.

GripThere are three common grip styles that golfers use: Interlocking Grip, Vardon Overlap, Ten Finger. The interlocking grip for right handed players, where the left hand grips the club's very end and the right hand grip just below the left side, has the left hand's little finger interlocked with the right hand's index finger, the left hand thumb is positioned in the right hand's lifeline region. The Vardon Overlap grip, has the right hand small finger positioned between the middle and index fingers of the left hand. Much as with the Interlocking handle, the left hand thumb lies inside the right hand's lifeline. Eventually, the Ten Finger Grip demands that the right hand small finger be positioned next to the index finger of the left hand. The thumb is positioned according to the grip of the Interlock and the grip of the Vardon Overlap.

Within the examples above for left handed golfers just turn left to right and right to left.
