Crimes against men and boys often go unreported owing to the stigma surrounding the idea of toxic masculinity. For the longest time, domestic violence against women has gained more limelight and are often more reported. But when it comes to domestic violence against men, the rate of reporting is abysmally low. Historically, the idea of men as stronger than women has done more damage to men than good. While few organizations are working actively to spread male awareness education, change cannot take place unless societies worldwide start acknowledging the stigma surrounding crimes against men.
We at Men’s Voices Ireland are tirelessly championing the cause of men. We aim to trigger conversations nationally as-well-as worldwide regarding male mental health and crimes against men. According to a 2018 report by WHO, the cultural stigma surrounding mental health often stops people from admitting and seeking help, and this problem is more pronounced in men. Our patriarchal societies around the world have stressed that men cannot be weak or emotionally vulnerable. This has pressurized men to bottle up themselves leading to imbalanced mental wellbeing. Suicide rates among men are four times more than among women. Self-harm among young boys is also increasing by the day. Observing International day for Men once a year is not enough to bring about collective change.
Therefore, we at the Men's Voices Ireland have taken an active role in spreading awareness about male rights, false sexual abuse charges against men, unlawful detention of men, bullying, homelessness of young boys, domestic violence on men, and unfair legislation in parenting laws affecting men. Through our motivational podcasts, blogs, articles, and various online publications, we aim to empower downtrodden men and provide them with a much-needed voice. Apart from that, our 2019 Conference was a huge success with a distinguished line-up of speakers addressing issues ranging from mental health, suicide, family law, and parental alienation.
