Such tissues make up a major component of bodies. Their main functions are photosynthesis, transport and secretion. Collenchyma: In most dicotyledonous plants, these tissues are present below the epidermis layer. These cells are circular, rectangular or polygonal in form and may contain chloroplasts. Their main function is to provide mechanical resistance to young stems and leaf pétioles. Sclerenchyma: These are the cells with narrow, long and thick cell walls. The cells are usually dead and have no protoplasts. There are two types of tissue known as sclerenchyma- fibres and sclereids. Fibres occur in various parts of the plant, and are typically thick-walled and spotted. Sclereids with small cavities are thick and cylindrical.
