In recent times, hair transplant has become a commonly adopted surgical procedure for aesthetic reasons. Complications that occur after hair transplant are actually lower when compared with other surgical procedures that people go through in the bid of looking good. However, if a hair transplant patient is not given the needed attention, a number of complications can occur. Some of these postoperative complications are explained below;
Hiccups
Hiccups are actually not part of the commonest complications of hair transplant, only about 4.11% cases have been reported. Hiccups occur during or shortly at the end of the operation, and lasts for a maximum of 3 days if no treatment is applied. They also occur as a result of exuberant air aspiration due to the arousal of diaphragmatic muscle motions by very vocal patients.
Sensation loss
Patients often lose the sensation ability at the scalp areas from which donors were taken and the recipient areas. Hair transplant patients rarely complain to the doctor about it even after noticing it, and it has been observed that everything returns to normal in less than 12 months and an average of 9 months after the procedure was carried out.
Pain
Postoperative pain occurs in many hair transplant patient after the surgery. Hair transplantations done with Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) have recorded more incidences of this because of the procedure required. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) on the other hand, has averagely 3,000 graft procedures for transplantation which last for a maximum of 8 hours and minimum of 6 hours. Patient might also feel pains in the muscle as a result of his/her lying posture at this period.
Scarring
Portions of the scalp where hair follicles are picked (often called ‘Donor Site’) for the purpose of transferring them to the needed area of the scalp (often called ‘Recipient Site) is usually where scarring occurs in most patients, and only few patients escape this complication. FUT procedure causes linear scar on this part of the head while scarring occurs from FUE procedure as a result of the multiple and abreast punches involved. Scarring in FUE procedure is not unavoidable, all that should be done is a reduction in the entrance of side-by-side punch.
Haemorrhage
The human scalp possesses a lot of blood supply whether it is bald or full of hair, despite this, haemorrhage is not a frequent occur during or after hair transplant is done. The few patients who experience this do so after leaving the clinic. A very effective way to reduce the risk of haemorrhage in hair transplant patient is the application of 15 minutes long pressure using clean gauze.
A preoperative evaluation is usually done for prospective hair transplant patients, and this evaluation is needed to know the history of the individual as regards bleeding diathesis, etc. A lot of patients are known to suffer haemorrhage during the surgery, but this can be controlled by injecting tumescent solutions contained in epinephrine.
The complications explained above are not ones that cannot be controlled therefore, they shouldn’t stop you from getting a hair transplant alongside its many benefits.
