As a professor at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Doug spent several years studying kangaroo rats in Nevada…and a love for the textiles of the American Southwest was born. Southwest Looms is a realization of a dream for Doug: the chance to combine his in-depth knowledge of traditional weaving techniques with the rustic style and rugged traditions of the American Southwest.

It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Douglas Lay, the owner of Southwest Looms, launched his oriental rug business after spending many months in Iran in the 1960s and 70s. He was conducting zoological research...and collecting beautiful, one-of-a-kind Oriental rugs. Since then, he has become a respected expert on hand-woven carpets who lectures nationwide on the subject.

Southwest Looms designs and manufactures stunning rugs that capture the essence of the American Southwest. We offer finely styled pile carpets in southwest designs, The Pendleton Collection, and flat-weave Navajo reproduction carpets, The Dreamcatcher Collection, Pendleton Reserve, Pendleton Classic, Santa Fe, Naturals and Indigo.
