Why You Shouldn’t Choose The Size Of Your Solar System Based On The Rate You’ll Get For Feed-In

Springers Solar explains why going for smaller is not a smart choice

Once you've made up your mind that you are ready to proceed with your residential solar installation in Brisbane or even beyond, there are several factors that you would be considering. One of these might be what is the best feed-in tariff that you'll be able to get as this would help finance your investment. The current situation is that electricity retailers are paying higher rates towards those who have smaller system limits. It is even the case that not only are these rates better, but they also are indeed quite generous and this might swing you towards investing in a smaller system. Don't. The team at Springers Solar warns against falling into this trap. Brand manager, Joe Springer explains why they urge their clients not to invest in a smaller residential solar system simply to earn a higher tariff.

"The first point you need to consider is that while you might earn a lower rate when you have a larger system in place, you will still be delivering a higher volume that will bring you the same kind of returns, if not more. It boils down to the fact that you will be delivering not for the best rate, but at a higher volume," Springer states. He also warned that it can easily be the case that you buy a smaller residential system for your home to be able to enjoy the higher rates that your specific electricity retailer offers, but this rate is not set in stone.

"Retailers can change the rate that they are offering at any given time. This change can be a lower rate and then you are still stuck with a smaller system and upgrading to a bigger solution would require another rather large cash investment on your side," he says.

"Rather base the size of the solar system that you buy for your home on the needs you have and how much electricity it would require to power your property than chasing tariffs which you have no control over and might leave you with a system that is not efficient to make enough return on," Springer shares his final thoughts on the matter.

Add to this the fact that larger solar systems, regardless of whether it is at your residential property, commercial premises, or industrial building, is better for the environment as it reduces a larger segment of the pressure on the power grid and the need for power generation.
