It is prepared through thermal dehydration of sodium bisulfite or by passing sulfur dioxide over sodium carbonate. Its applications include food preservatives additives in wine, perfumes and odors. Disulfurous acid is also commonly used as a reducing agent,or employed to easily oxidize pharmaceuticals such as epinephrine hydrochloride and salt phenyl, to retard injection oxidation.
