A check valve is a device that controls fluid flow in one direction only. They have two ports, one for input and the other for output of media. They're called "one way valves" or "non return valves" since they only allow media to flow in one direction. A check valve's primary function is to prevent the system from backflowing. Check valves, also known as non-return valves, are used in piping systems to prevent backflow. When pressure is applied to the valve, it opens, and when the flow is reversed, it closes. It allows for unfettered flow and shuts down when the pressure falls below a certain level.
