The property has been maintained and preserved in its natural habitat along the Tombigbee River bordered by forests of tall Southern Pine Trees. The Ring-neck pheasant is one of 50 species that are known, and this is the only species in North America that has been given the go ahead to hunt.

Wingshooting is a very popular sport and Pheasant shooting is one of the favourite birds to hunt and shoot. At Westervelt Lodge the guests are treated to several different activities one is a European style driven pheasant shooting. These are set up with 300 flighted birds and 20 guns shooting. The well-trained Labrador Retrievers fetch the shot birds, and this event is broken into two periods one morning and one afternoon.
