A dermatologist Chiswick at The West London Clinic has announced that one in four men and one in five women will be diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer with more than two hundred and ten thousand cases being diagnosed each year in the United Kingdom. This is expected to rise to four hundred thousand cases of non-melanoma skin cancer in the next two years.
At the same time, melanoma skin cancer in the United Kingdom has reached a record high this year with more than seventeen thousand cases being diagnosed each year and this is expected to increase to fifty percent in the next twenty years, a serious concern for dermatologists throughout the country.
UK summer temperatures are rising and the public are making use of the excellent weather. This comes with risks of sun exposure, that has been proven to be linked with skin cancer. It is believed that this is just one of the many factors that is contributing to the surge in the number of positive cases this year.
Nine out of ten skin cancer cases are a result of UV overexposure, caused by the sun and sunbeds. UV radiation damages the DNA in the skin cells that builds up over time and can result in skin cancer. Lying in the sun and getting a tan has been popular for more than fifty years. Now that we known the consequences, people aged fifty five and older have an increased risk of skin cancer, this has tripled in the past thirty years.
Dr Arjuna Imbuldeniya, the Founder and Director at The West London Clinic, said βThe sun is not the only contributing factor to the surge of skin cancer cases in the United Kingdom. Older age is one of the main cancer risks and the UK's population is growing, we are living longer. The good news is that the death rates associated with skin cancer have declined and more people are surviving skin cancer thanks to the research and development of early diagnostics and treatments.β
The dermatology team at The West London Clinic recommends that everyone should be monitoring their skin regularly. Any changes or new spots should be checked by a dermatologist. Those at high risk of skin cancer, especially those with fair skin and lots of freckles, should have a full check up at least every six months.
