Signs of Addiction in Teens You Should Not Ignore

Addiction can happen to anyone, most especially to young people who are more likely to fall for peer pressure and be exposed to people using drugs.

As a parent, you would want to know what signs of addiction to watch out for and when to do drug intervention.

Watch out for the following signs of drug addiction in teens:

1. Uncontrollable and erratic behavior.

People who have addiction problems tend to have a lot of mood swings. What might be an obedient child might suddenly become willful. They might not listen to you anymore. You can’t predict their behavior and you have trouble determining what they will do next.

2. Increased aggression

Drug and alcohol addiction can also make them more aggressive, especially when they are prevented from getting their source of addiction. If they are forced to stay away from alcohol or drugs, they suddenly become angry. They might also lash out and become defensive when you confront them about it.

3. Lack of socializing

Your once sociable teen might spend his or her time alone or in the company of new people. You might notice that your child is spending more time on his own and neglecting family events. This can be another indication of drug addiction.

4. Neglecting important tasks and responsibilities

When you give tasks to your child, it’s not done on time or your child finds a lot of excuses for not being able to contribute to the household.

What should you do if you notice these signs?

You would want to talk to the people close to your child to learn more about his or her activities outside the home. Did your child meet new friends? Does your child have issues at school?

Talk to your child about it. You would want to choose a time when your child can truly be present in the conversation before you start your drug intervention. Let your child know that you understand the struggle he or she is going through.

Addiction is a disease and the teens afflicted by it should be treated as patients who need a lot of help. Try not to pass judgment but also make sure you are not enabling the addiction.
