It is a legal requirement for the safety inspection of fire doors to obtain the certification of compliance. It is essential for a competent and responsible person to be appointed to carry out fire safety checks. Both the responsible person and the company need to understand the importance of the checks as fire doors have been designed to save lives in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Fire doors are not ordinary doors they are engineered doors with the function and purpose of the safety of people, to protect property and the company’s assets in the event of a fire. Every building should have fire doors installed and a fire risk assessment needs to be established and discussed between the company’s safety representative and fire safety inspector.
If the company does not comply with the Fire Safety Act and the Fire Safety Order (FSO) as stipulated in Article 17, which states that the company is responsible to ensure all fire and escape doors are to be maintained and installed correctly. If the company does not comply with the Fire Safety Act it may face severe penalties.
AJM Fire Safety’s certified and highly trained inspectors will perform a survey of every fire door in the building. Their team of experts will provide a report of their findings that will detail any issues that need to be rectified. They will assist the company should there be any issues and the company will be given time to have the issues corrected. Once the issues have been rectified and to the fire safety inspector’s satisfaction will a certification of compliance be issued.
“As a general rule fire doors should be inspected every six months. Fire doors will fail inspections if the doors have been incorrectly or poorly installed, modifications or changes made to the fire doors that are not compliant with the legal requirements,” said Jonny Millard, Managing Director, of AJM Fire Safety.
The company must take fire safety seriously and ensure its fire doors are fit for the purpose as designed. The frequency of inspections is dependent on the foot traffic in the building such as hospitals, restaurants, schools, businesses and shopping centres where more regular fire inspections would be required.
The responsible person needs to identify the environment, possible risks involved and the expected usage of the fire doors. It is vitally important for the responsible person to ensure regular and proper maintenance to keep the fire doors compliant and kept in good condition.
