There are a number of anti-epileptic drugs and seizure medications that work really well for patients suffering from epilepsy, but they can also have some nasty side-effects. Sometimes, more effective therapies are needed for people suffering from seizures and epilepsy. Stem cell research is now one of the options available for treating epilepsy successfully.
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are the cells which have the ability to be developed into different types of specialized cells. Most of these cells are post-mitotic, which means they are unable to divide and grow into the tissues of new types. However, stem cells can divide after long-periods of no activity and can be transformed into new cell types including the blood cells, nerve cells, and muscle cells. Stem cell therapy is an effective treatment for epilepsy.
Can stem cells be used for treating seizures and epilepsy?
Most cases of epilepsy are attributed to the receptor expression in the brain which is due to the mutations. Correcting these can reduce the likelihood of possible electrical seizures in the brain.
The excitation overload may kill the neurons in the hippocampus. This can lead to the worsening of the condition over a period of time and may contribute to the development of TLE or Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. There are anti-epileptic medications that can treat these seizures, however, the damage caused by the temporal lobe is irreversible and long-lasting. There are a number of current therapies that do not address this issue.
Stem cell-based therapies have shown promising results in the treatment of various diseases that includes epilepsy. A number of studies conducted on animals have shown that stem cells have been effective and have regenerative properties. But larger clinical trials are also required before the stem cell therapy can become universal.
Between 20-40 percent of the patients with epilepsy continue to have seizures after trying multiple anti-seizure drugs. People who take drugs for epilepsy may continue to suffer from depression, cognitive and memory issues further seizures disorders.
According to new research, stem cells have been found to be particularly useful in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis treatment as well.
