If the building requires a pitch or slope which are two downward angular parts, the portal steel frames can be constructed with mono-pitch or double-pitch joints at the apex of the roof.

A secondary framework of purlins is fitted to rafters, which are then fixed to columns. Portal steel frame structures are clad with prefabricated compound metal panels that incorporate insulation and masonry cladding is provided at a lower level to give greater resilience and provide security.

If the distance of the frame rafters is too high they can be reduced with a more curved rafter or a mansard design can be formed. This is a practical way for rainwater to run off the roof which can become a problem for large roofs.

Frame rafters need to be made flexible for high-bending movements for the joints and column to keep sagging to a minimum when movement is close to the roof. Despite the simplicity of the structure that is formed special care must be taken to ensure the structure has sufficient restraints to prevent buckling.

Steel portal frames are made off-site and then bolted to a substructure. Although the steel frames are exposed internally, the structure of the frame can be designed with impressive and practical designs.
