Understanding the difference between conventional and structural earthing is essential to make the right choice by orchestrating a connection between electrical and non-electrical equipment.

A particular metallic structure with a proper current-carrying capacity is more likely to be hit by lightning. In some cases, there is a risk from the fault current. A fault can cause in the equipment that is closely attached to the metallic structure. Hence, the design structure needs to be under protection. It is supposed to have a pretty low impedance path when it comes in contact with the grounding system so that the fault current can be transferred safely and correctly to the ground without any damage. Hence, structural earthing is preferred in such cases.

However, in the case of the conventional earthing method, there is an independent electrical system with a dedicated conductor for earthing. This conductor directly connects with the metallic structure or the electrical equipment and forms a bridge at the earth pits. In the case of electrical equipment, the conventional method of earthing proves to be much more beneficial.

In the case of structural earthing, there is no need for dedicated earthing, which makes the maintenance process pretty easy. It is a relatively economical process. On the other hand, conventional earthing might take a little bit more effort for maintenance, but it also guarantees the most safety for human lives.

Another main difference between structural and conventional earthing is that the former requires no superior conductor for carrying the fault current. In contrast, the latter has larger fault currents and requires a conductor. Structural earthing doesn’t require additional area, but conventional earthing does.
