Affordable search engine optimization UK company looks back at the introduction of Google Panda.

Twelve years ago Google launched its new update, Panda. The algorithm had a major impact on the search engine optimization industry, with content strategies having to be revisited. This algorithmic update impacted more than eleven percent of search rankings. It was designed to reduce the ranking of low-quality sites and reward those of higher quality, those that focus on original content and information.

The algorithm was originally rolled out on 23 February 2011 and most search engine optimization specialists only found out about it on 24 February 2011. It impacted all websites, no matter the size or industry. Businesses were going out of business because they had relied on their Google traffic without the organic traffic they relied on, they lost valuable business.

Over two years, Google introduced new upgrades to Panda every month. This was not a penalty. The websites that were impacted were downgraded algorithmically, which means a Google employee took action to reduce their rankings. The reason Google originally launched Panda was to target low-quality content, a solution to content farms.

At the time there was a lot of speculation around the algorithm's arrival, most of it is irrelevant today. Panda is responsible for evaluating the overall quality of a website in its entirety. It is responsible for measuring the site, looking at the majority of pages, and taking the site as a whole into account when ranking on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

Ben Cooper, the Sales Manager at Cartoozo, an affordable search engine optimization company in the UK, said “Panda looks for low-quality content that will harm the website ranking. This includes looking at the site architecture to assess the quality of the website. This has resulted in websites with low-quality content reducing rankings to improve user experience. People that search using Google want content that provides them with value and information, the content must be useful and be well written.”

Ben Cooper, went on to say “Google Panda identifies poorly written and copied content and reduces the sites rankings accordingly. By removing these low-quality pages and optimizing them for success, we help clients improve their rankings.”
