When the turbocharger on the car is working, it has to withstand the impact of the high-temperature and high-pressure exhaust gas from the engine. The speed of the turbine is generally above tens of thousands of revolutions, up to 200,000 revolutions per minute, and the temperature is also as high as 900 to 1000 ℃ . How is the supercharger lubricated and cooled at such high operating temperatures and speeds?

The principle of turbocharging

The basic principle of turbocharging is actually equivalent to adding an air compressor to the intake air of the car engine to increase the intake air volume of the engine by compressing the air. What drives the compressor is the exhaust gas from the engine itself. By blowing air to the blades of the exhaust gas turbine, the exhaust gas pushes the blades of the exhaust gas turbine, thereby driving the intake blades, allowing the compressor to "blow" the air to the cylinder of the engine, increasing the intake pressure, speeding up the intake speed, and the intake air is faster. Naturally, the more oil, the more power and torque the car has.

It is also the most core component - turbine impeller, compressor impeller and rotor shaft, and there is a high-speed relative motion between the supercharger housing and the ordinary bearing at this speed. Therefore, the bearing of the supercharger is a kind of Special floating bearings. The floating bearing is actually a ring that fits on the shaft. There are gaps between the ring and the shaft and between the ring and the bearing seat, forming a double oil film. The ring floats between the shaft and the bearing housing. When the supercharger is working, the bearing rotates between the shaft and the bearing seat. Due to the extremely high rotational speed and extremely high temperature, this part also has extremely high requirements for lubrication and cooling. If the heat of the oil is not dissipated in time, coking or carbon deposits will form on the seal ring and radial bearing of the supercharger impeller shaft. Coking and carbon deposition will damage the seal and lubrication. After the lubrication is damaged, it will increase the wear and further damage the seal, which will eventually lead to oil leakage or abnormal noise of the car, and even sticking in serious cases.

In addition, due to the high speed of the rotor and the high relative speed between the bearing and the bearing, if the oil supply is not sufficient, or the strength of the oil film of the oil is insufficient, it will also cause abnormal wear of the bearing, thus greatly shortening the service life of the bearing. The main type of supercharger damage is abnormal bearing wear caused by poor lubrication.
