Mental health is one area where employees believe employers should be responsible for supporting, above all other well beings, says Dan, an occupational health specialist.
Research over the years has shown the increasing desire for mental health support. Although many employees still want employers to take care of their social, financial, and physical needs, mental health stands above them all. Employers need to understand that mental health challenges should be promptly addressed before they get out of hand.
"Employers need to support employee health and wellbeing. Although mental health support is at the top of their agenda, they don't know how to go about it," says Doctor Fred. "However, there is provision of help within the group risk benefits, such as employer-funded income protection and critical illness, and these allow access to professional mental health care at no added cost."
Accessing mental health treatment independently is not a walk in the park due to the difficulty of accessing the right kind of professionals. It is also very expensive to privately fund mental health treatment. This calls for greater investment in mental health by employers. But the investment dedicated to mental health does not have to be as big as many employers think.
Doctor Fred, an occupational health consultant, says, "Employers should focus on the mental health support that is included in their group life, purchase apps for managing mental health and much more. Mental health support that is fully funded by group risk providers is cheap and helps save lives."
Poor mental health has been leading in causes of claims under the group income protection policy for quite some time now. This clearly shows the value employers and employees derive from the group risk cover for mental health.
"Similar to physical conditions, mental health issues are of a wide variety. Conditions differ in severity from one individual to another. The illness's seriousness depends on various factors and comes in many forms, from mild anxiety to critical psychotic episodes. Thus, different forms of treatments must be made available, such as providing access to therapy, counseling, and treatment. "Dr. Fred said.
Employers need to ensure that the group risk cover they are purchasing has mental health support inclusion. With the help of occupational health companies, all employees' expectations regarding their mental health needs will be addressed.
