How does this work?

Waterproof and breathable fabric
Water-repellent fabrics typically consist of two or three layers, including:

1. An outer layer called "fabric" - most commonly nylon or polyester. This outer layer is designed to repel, protect and be aesthetically pleasing. This layer is not waterproof, but is usually treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) to "bead" the water.

2. Coated or laminated film - usually made of polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) or polyurethane (PU). The role of the membrane is to block the entry of water, but still allow water vapor to escape. This is achieved through micropores that are small enough to prevent liquid water from passing through, but large enough to allow liquid vapor (your sweat) to escape.

3. Three Layer Mesh - Bonded with internal service to create a 3 layer fabric. 2-ply fabric can accept a separate fabric liner to protect the exposed membrane and increase comfort, but usually has an exposed membrane.
