The TV Writers’ Brunch Group Provides Latino Writers the Support They Need

A new writer`s assistance was born. Sitting on a lawn five years ago, 20 Latino women were gathered in a less than formal meet-up. However, this was the day when a star was born.

It was the start of a new beginning. They baptized themselves as “the TV Writers brunch group” to the world of Latino women. These are the kind of initiatives that are very close to the heart of the team at L’ATTITUDE. Since the latter group hosted their first Latino professional meet-up in 2018, they are working endlessly to empower the Latino communities with an even more intense focus on Latino women in the corporate world.

“Their vision for starting the female writer’s group was to form their version of the old boy network, to meet up, to get to know each other and to socialize,” says Andrea Trujillo, the director of digital brand marketing at L’ATTITUDE.

She shares some insights into the achievements of these ladies. Many years after gathering on the lawn, the network has expanded to 150 women actively socializing while working on their struggles to find Latino writers. The cause of this concern was a pipeline problem. To overcome the challenge, the TV writers’ group, moved into mentoring and paired with higher-level professionals for one-on-one mentorship sessions. These sessions were an effort to help writers to land staff writer jobs. In return, they would team up with the TV writers’ group to continue the sequence. This type of mentorship turned out a huge success and opened doors for many Colombian women who like to write half-hour cultural shows.

Due to the growth of the TV writers’ group, meetups with mentors and mentees on career goals, also databases were set in place for assistance needed, which on its own became the norm for monthly meetups. TV writers’ group has so far grown from strength to strength to not only focus on creating employment in scriptwriting but also to mentor young people. They share their knowledge on how to navigate the scriptwriting industry, business management, finance, and even childcare.

For the TV Writers Brunch group, the biggest barrier for entry was finding people to hire them and to buy their shows. However, since then they have overcome the barrier for entry with much more Latino creators available, which were created through their meetups, mentorship, and guidance.

“The TV Writers'Brunch group members don’t have any connections in high places nor financial support and must solely rely on each member for the growth and upliftment of the Latino community and that is exactly what they do,” Trujillo concluded.
