The new 300 MW (450MWh) Victorian big battery has commenced operation in early December 2021 in Geelong. During the commissioning in July, a fire did break out, but the battery has been delivered in record time. It has taken less than a full year to build and begin operating, which means Australia now has the new biggest battery in the world.
The battery doubles the capacity of the Hornsdale Power Reserve, owned by a renewable developer from France and Tesla's technology. It is unlikely that the battery will hold its first position for very long with the speed I which plans are being realised throughout Australia this year. The battery went live within a year of being awarded the grid services contract.
The battery was declared operational on 8 December 2021, located right next to the Moorabool Terminal Station in Geelong. The battery is expected to modernise the electricity grid in the state while supporting new renewable energy capacity and boosting reliability, which has been a concern for most up until now.
The government advised that shows every $1 invested in the battery, provides $2.40 in benefits to households and businesses in Victoria. The battery has caught the eye of the world with its size and the fire that broke out during commissioning in July, which destroyed two of the projects more than two hundred Tesla Megapacks.
Joe Springer, the Manager at Springers Solar, said “There have been new discussions regarding the safety of lithium-ion batteries, with investigations into the fire, believing there was a leak in the Megapacks cooling system. The systems in place to detect faults didn't see the problem due to them not having enough time to map the control systems. The investigations around the fire were done and action has been taken and necessary changes have been implemented to ensure safety and reliability.”
This new Victorian big battery is part of the System Integrity Protection Scheme, which was initiated by the Victorian Government to improve essential transmission investments. The battery provides automatic responses for unexpected outages, which means that grid power can be stabilized and reduce the risk of outages in the long run.
