Removing the smoke odour is indeed not a cakewalk but a hot potato. You might have spent time on youtube or searching Google for DIY but ended up with a disappointment. We’ve mentioned some tips & tricks that will help you remove the stubborn smoke odour.
Sunlight
The first thing you should give it a try is the sunlight. Put the mattress outside so the sun-rays can eliminate the odour. Remember, the smell may not go overnight. Therefore, keep the bed in the sunlight for about a week. Don’t leave the mattress outside at night.
By Opening of Windows:
It might be possible that leaving your mattress in the sunlight isn’t possible, especially if you live in an apartment or flat. Also, there could be any reason like your bed is too heavy. In this case, keep the doors and the windows open for some time. The direct sunlight & air will vanish the smoke odour slowly.
Baking Soda:
Baking soda tends to swallow odours. Take a small quantity and rub it all over on the mattress. Later on, leave it under the sunlight. Post noon flips the bed and again applies some baking soda on that side too. After a few hours, vacuum clean it thoroughly. Most of the time, it removes the odour. Repeat if the smell is still there.
Vinegar Water:
You can say that vinegar is another best absorbent. Arrange a spray bottle and fill it half with water & remaining half with vinegar. Now, spray gently on each corner post brushing off the excess soda. You may have to repeat this step 3-4 times in a day depending on how strong the odour is. You may smell slight vinegar for a few days. But it is still better than smoke. You may use a room freshener to dispose of it anytime you feel.
Alternatively, you can take a small quantity of vinegar and leave it near the mattress on the top. Leave the room & it will remove the smoke odour in a day or two.
Coffee Grounds:
Take two separate paper plates and put some grounded coffee on it. Leave both plates with the mattress for one night. It will not only absorb the odour but also masks the vinegar smell.
Deodorise:
You can also use a room freshener or disinfectant. You can find it easily on any eCommerce website like Odoban, Stanley Steemer etc.
Time:
As mentioned earlier, removing the cigarette odour isn’t a one-night game. Good things take time as a result removing the smoke odour may take some time. Repeat the steps mentioned above religiously. And you’ll be able to beat that adamant smoke odour. The entire process may take up to seven days or more.
Professional Cleaning:
In the case you’re running short of time, get in touch with the nearest professional mattress cleaner and get the job done in no time. The cleaners offer professional cleaning & a standard package may include sanitizing, odour removal, urine removal, stain removal, dust mite or bed bug removal. It can hit your pocket though it can be a time-saving option for you or your family.
Always keep in mind that professional cleaning may take from a few hours to a day or two. During the process of cleaning, you won’t be able to use the house or the room for some time. Therefore, watch out your calendar or to-do list before scheduling a professional cleaning.
Cover or Protector:
We always recommend using a good mattress cover or protector. The reason is it is the cheapest way to mask that stinging cigarette smell. If you’ve tried all the steps mentioned above & the odour is still there then, cover the mattress to cover up the smoke odour. Some covers or protectors are allergen-free and will also enhance the durability of the bed.
