Since Independence in India, more than 100 city names have been changed many times. We will let you know about some of those city names that were changed multiple times and what are their current names –
Prayagraj :-
Allahabad was the name we all knew of this lovely city in Uttar Pradesh. The name was kept by Akbar's grandson and the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan. Before this, the name of the city was Illahabas, which Akbar named himself. The name meant Abode of God. Moreover, in 2018 it was renamed again by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and currently, it is named Prayagraj.
Thiruvananthapuram :-
The original name of the city was Thiruvananthapuram itself. However, it was changed to Trivandrum in English, as it was getting tough for the British to pronounce Thiruvananthapuram. However, in 1991, it was changed again by the Indians to its original name – Thiruvananthapuram. The name of the city means – The City of Lord Ananta. It is one of the oldest cities, with its traditions dating back to 1000 BC.
Visakhapatnam :-
The city has gone through a host of name changes. At the time when the British ruled the country, it was called – Waltair. After independence, it was changed to Vizagpatnam. However, in 1987, it was renamed as Visakhapatnam and is still called the same.
