Types of Corrugated Boxes and Their Applications

Different types of corrugated boxes serve unique packaging needs across various industries.

The easy availability of materials makes corrugated boxes strong, versatile, and cheap and therefore become popular in various industrial applications. A fluted sheet, sandwiched between one or two linerboards construct corrugated boxes, which provide protection to the contents against impact, moisture, and rough handling. But not all corrugated boxes are the same; there are many different types and styles, each made for a specific purpose and level of protection. Thus, companies must determine the best way to protect their products, based on different types of corrugated boxes being available with different applications.
The first major difference in corrugated boxes is in wall structure. The most broadly used corrugated boxes are single-wall type, consisting of one layer of fluted material sandwiched between two liners. These are suitable for the package of light to moderately heavy items for retailing, shipment, and e-commerce. Double-wall corrugated boxes are tougher and sturdier than single-wall boxes, as they consist of two layers of fluting and three liners. A double-wall box is ideal for heavy products or products needing extra protection in transit. The highest strength with three layers of fluting and four liners is offered by the triple-wall corrugated box, used for an industrial application, heavy machinery, or large shipments requiring top-tier protection.
Corrugated boxes are of different styles according to cutting and folding processes. The most common box style is Regular Slotted Container (RSC). All flaps have the same length, and when closed, they all meet at the center. RSC boxes are a cost-effective alternative suitable for general shipping and storage. Full Overlap Boxes (FOL) have flaps that tend to overlap completely at closure, endowing strength to the box and resistance toward rough handling. Such boxes are suitable for heavy items or products that might be stacked.
Die-cut boxes are custom-designed boxes built using a cutting die. They can literally be designed in an infinite combination of sizes and styles for specific products with the protection aside from the aesthetics. They come into heavy use in retail and branding applications, where product specification matters. Telescope boxes are used for delicate or highly-priced items and are strongly recommended for extra protection with two separate components (top and bottom that slide over one another). Folder-type boxes, such as one-piece folders, are ideal for flat items, such as books, picture frames, or laptops. They fold around the product to provide a good, snug fit, giving good protection with a low amount of construction material used.

The nature of products varies with types of applications for different industries that need corrugated boxes. E-commerce uses a single-wall RSC box for products from clothing to electronics. In the food and beverage sector, moisture-resistant corrugated boxes are used for perishables. Heavy parts and equipment in the automotive and industrial sectors are shipped in double- or triple-wall boxes. On the other hand, customized die-cut or corrugated boxes are used.
It is ensured that the right type of corrugated box gives greater protection to the product, facilitates better shipment, and makes a good impression on customers. Be it small products or large machinery, there are corrugated boxes designed for any of your packaging needs.
