[Kent, 21/06/2023] The number of works documented in the digital Vent Hygiene Register database has increased by 78 per cent since March 2022. The total number of reports for the year has exceeded 21,000 for the first time due to increased awareness among customers, insurers, and fire officers regarding the importance of these systems in maintaining the fire integrity of buildings.
Serious Fires
There is at least one serious fire daily in commercial kitchens in the United Kingdom. To reduce the risk of fire spreading, owners are enhancing the maintenance of their grease extraction systems, ventilation, and ductwork. The Vent Hygiene Register reports that the sector's TR19 Grease Specification is now used to clean thousands more systems.
Vent Hygiene Register
The Vent Hygiene Register aims to ensure the safe use of ventilation systems as gas installations, regulated by the mandatory Gas Safe Register. The London Fire Brigade and the RISC Authority, an insurance fire risk organization, have recognised the Vent Hygiene Register, with the former providing updated guidance for catering establishments that includes TR19 measures.
Higher Standards
Although it is crucial to maintaining building safety, the sector lacks regulation. However, over 150 members of the Vent Hygiene Register are leading the way in upholding higher standards and promoting regulatory compliance. This is consistent with the cultural shift the Building Safety Act 2022 promoted.
Commitment to Building Safety
Digital technology has aided in quickly developing a means for reputable companies to prove to clients, insurers, and the public that they are committed to ensuring safety within buildings. Although pleased with achieving over 21,000 compliant cleans, there is still a significant amount of work to be done as many systems need to be updated to meet the proper standards, putting occupants at risk.
Fire Prevention
Vent hygiene is not limited to cleaning; it includes fire prevention. The audience's growing awareness is evident from the increased use of their database to register compliant cleans, which provides more assurances for clients, insurers, and fire officers.
