Patients With Polycystic Kidney Disease Could Benefit From Keto Supplement Formulation In 2023

A recent study has proven that ketosis, which s a state where the body uses dietary fats for energy, could have positive effects on kidney function in those affected by polycystic kidney disease, a hereditary disease. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common hereditary kidney disease and causes ten per cent of all kidney failure.

A study focusing on the keto diet and ADPKD was conducted with sixty-three patients to demonstrate the efficiency, safety and feasibility of the keto diet as a therapeutic agent for those with the disease. The results were presented at the Kidney Week at the American Society of Nephrology in Florida. The participants were divided into three groups, one following the keto diet for three months. The second group did three days of water fasting each month, which leads to ketogenic metabolism. The third group followed a common dietary recommendation given to ADPKD patients to reduce salt intake and drink more than two litres daily.

The goal of the study was to identify the feasibility of the dietary change. It was given as a questionnaire and metabolic test to detect ketosis. Ninety-one per cent of patients on the keto diet and eighty-nine per cent of the water fasting group rated the diet as feasible. Ketosis was shown in eighty-five per cent of the participants in all three phases of the water fasting group. Seventy-eight per cent of the ketogenic diet group showed higher values than before starting the trials.

After three months, positive signals were focusing on the important parameters including kidney function and size. The kidneys reduced in size during the keto diet but increased in the controlled group. The participants on the keto diet showed significant positive kidney function compared to the control group. This was an excellent result that was not expected to occur within such a short time frame. Unfortunately at this point, the data isn't sufficient to recommend the keto diet for ADPKD patients.
