R-1,3 Butanediol Specialist Advises That Processed Foods Could Contribute To Cognitive Decline
R-1,3 Butanediol is a plant-based ketone supplement that can be added to numerous products to help clients achieve ketosis quickly and effectively without unwanted side effects. It is no secret that unhealthy diets, especially those high in sugars, cause changes in the brain and can lead to cognitive impairment.
Several factors contribute to cognitive decline, including genetics and socioeconomic factors. Ongoing research indicates that a poor diet is a high-risk factor for memory impairments throughout the natural ageing process, including the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Evaluating how certain diets erode brain health as we get older, research is being conducted on the effects of consuming minimally processed foods compared to ultra-processed foods.
Two recent studies are suggesting that eating processed foods can exacerbate age-related cognitive decline and increase the risk of dementia in the long run. Another study found that ultra-processed food was not associated with worse cognition in those over the age of sixty. Further research is necessary to identify how diet plays a role in cognition in our later years.
Highly processed foods are lower in nutrients and fibre, yet they are high in sugars, salts and fats when compared to a minimally processed food products. Examples of highly processed foods include cookies, frozen meals, chips, flavoured yoghurts, fast foods and sodas. It's important to not confuse highly processed foods with processed foods that retain their natural characteristics including canned vegetables, frozen fruits and dried pasta.
A study was carried out to compare the rate of cognitive decline over eight years between two groups consuming different amounts of highly processed foods. Ten thousand participants were selected in Brazil and reported their dietary habits over twelve months. Their cognitive performance was evaluated using standard memory and executive function tests. The study found that those eating a highly processed food diet at the start of the study showed a more cognitive decline when compared to those that ate less of a processed diet. The difference was modest, therefore it is not clear if the small difference can be associated with a higher consumption of highly processed foods.
Terry Kitagawa, the Nutrition Product Development Manager at Avila, said “A second study was carried out in the United Kingdom with seventy-two thousand participants and measured ultra-processed foods and dementia risk. Those eating high amounts of ultra-processed foods were diagnosed with dementia over ten years. This was one out of every one hundred and twenty participants. Those that consumed no or very little ultra-processed foods saw one in one hundred and seventy participants diagnosed with dementia.”
