Luxurious and large complex hotels often hire hundreds to thousands of employees yearly. Among these careers is the hotel receptionist job.

The inn of the Middle Ages had an innkeeper who ensured that travelers got accommodation and something to eat before resuming their journey. These inns were simple and had not much of a luxurious touch. Nonetheless, from the 18th century, the rich and the aristocrats started spending time in inns. These notable people desired luxurious and high-end facilities, making the inns expand and requiring efficient management. In addition, with the progress in transportation, people started spending their time away from home. Eventually, inns birthed hotels as we know them today.

Hotels have diversified their job descriptions with many responsibilities to facilitate smooth running. It is one of the popular job searches in hospitality management. According to the U.S Bureau of Statistics, the overall receptionist job will rise by 4% by 2030. Some of these receptionist jobs are in the hotel sector.

Hotel receptionist responsibilities have not changed much over the years. In many hotels, a receptionist may be tasked with the following:
• Booking and canceling reservations
• Processing payments
• Answering guests’ questions
• Plan travel arrangements for guests
• Taking calls, responding to emails and text messages

It means that hotel receptionist jobs are highly in demand, especially in hotels located in tourist destinations. In general, hotel receptionists are expected to have the following skills:
• Be a good communicator: A receptionist is the face of any organization/establishment. Thus, the individual should possess good communication skills. It involves being knowledgeable in verbal and written communication. Furthermore, they should be able to have excellent customer service, work in teams and learn conflict management tactics. On the other end, a bilingual or multilingual receptionist is highly cherished in locations with an influx of tourists.
• Possessing an upbeat personality: A hotel receptionist should be someone who is irreprehensible. They should be able to show professionalism and optimism when dealing with guests and clients all the time. Most hotel management is more likely to hire someone with excellent interpersonal skills, such as one who can exercise patience and empathy. Moreover, being reasonable and having a sound mind is usually admired in this specific responsibility.

A receptionist with technical skills: It is expected that people applying for hotel receptionist jobs should also have technical skills. Having a high school/ college diploma should enable them to handle technical issues, including
• Accounting: Some responsibilities of a hotel receptionist may include processing payments and auditing.
• Computer literacy: A receptionist must have excellent computer skills such as creating word documents, data entry, and processing invoices.

The good news is that a hotel receptionist career entails much on-job training that can assist individuals in expanding and honing their skills.

The future of the receptionist: The advancement of technology has revolutionized the responsibilities of hotel receptionists. For instance, during the COVID 19 pandemic, some hotels opted for virtual/remote, part-time hotel receptionists. Additionally, most hotels make bookings and process payments online. Nevertheless, technology isn't phasing out the traditional receptionist entirely. On the contrary, it revolutionizes the space and how a receptionist works. Thus, being a receptionist is still valid and vital employment for job seekers.
