Lower Respiratory Infections and Influenza are Some of the Health Issues to Watch in 2023

With the fourth year of battling COVID-19, experts keep an eye on health challenges coming out of the pandemic. Among the issues of concern are lower respiratory infections and influenza.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation reports concerns over health issues brought on by the pandemic. They cite a surge in lower respiratory infections, specifically Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Influenza, as health issues to watch in 2023.
In particular, RSV cases have been on the rise among children who haven’t had exposure to it for several years. This has led to an increase in outbreaks of RSV in some countries. Additionally, there has been a surge across all ages for influenza cases.

This trend is coupled with the pre-pandemic concern of chronic non-communicable infections, creating a more complex and challenging health environment.
Moving forward the challenge
Healthcare professionals have the challenge of managing these infections and reducing their burden on global health.

Influenza vaccination is among the strategies to prevent the spread of influenza and reduce the LRI symptoms attributable to flu. Vaccination also helps individuals build immunity against the virus, reducing the chance of infection. For RSV, however, there is currently no approved vaccine. Yet, preventive strategies are being developed to help protect vulnerable populations.

Concerns for the healthcare workforce
It’s not only the general public who needs to be aware of these health issues. Healthcare providers must also stay up-to-date on the latest developments and best infection prevention and control practices.
Healthcare workers are more directly exposed to these threatening infections, leaving them at greater risk of sickness. For many, this leads to burnout and a desire to quit their jobs. In response, healthcare providers can take Infection Control courses to help them learn the skills to protect themselves from these illnesses. Such courses can teach them best practices and the latest innovations to prevent and control infection.
Businesses and organizations can work with training providers such as Mirbly Ltd. to ensure their healthcare workers have the knowledge and skills to protect themselves from infection. This will provide confidence to healthcare professionals and keep them safe.
